CAD Technician

Indianapolis, IN $35/HR - $50/HR Contract

Overview: 

The CAD Technician plays a key role in supporting a large technical operations campus with diverse equipment and facility systems. This position provides drawing and documentation support for mechanical, electrical, site, and building layout projects that enable equipment installation and project execution. The role involves gathering input from internal stakeholders and translating technical requirements into accurate drawings used for planning and estimating work. Success in this position requires strong collaboration across a multidisciplinary environment, working closely with engineers, technicians, facility teams, and project leaders. Excellent communication skills and the ability to manage tasks independently or as part of a team are essential.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Deliver drafting and design support to engineering and project teams throughout project planning, design, and construction phases.
  • Use CAD software to convert markups into finalized drawings, verify accuracy, apply proper labeling, and maintain up-to-date documentation sets.
  • Ensure all drafting work complies with internal design and documentation standards.
  • Participate in on-site field walks to collect measurements and confirm existing conditions.
  • Review drawings and technical documents for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, project coordinators, and technical staff to align design intent and execution.
  • Interface with facility users, maintenance staff, and technicians to define project needs and obtain vendor quotations for small-scale facility and engineering tasks.
  • Maintain both digital and physical drawing archives, ensuring organized and accessible recordkeeping.
  • Incorporate as-built information into master facility documentation in coordination with engineering leads.
  • Develop an understanding of site infrastructure and building systems to create accurate layouts for capital projects and new equipment installations.
  • Provide technical support to ensure adherence to internal specifications and design standards.
  • Apply a working knowledge of relevant building and engineering codes to support compliant designs.
  • Integrate environmental, health, and safety considerations into all project work.
  • Perform additional duties as needed to support ongoing operational and project objectives.

Job Qualifications:

  • Two-year diploma in design/drafting with CAD training from a recognized institution with 2+ years proven CAD drafting/design experience or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of experience supporting engineering or design work within a technical, research, or industrial setting.
  • Skilled in facility and infrastructure drafting using current computer-aided design (CAD) tools.
  • Familiarity with site layout, civil, and utility design projects.
  • Background in engineering or surveying-related drafting is an advantage.
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on precision, consistency, and efficiency.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and teamwork abilities to support effective project collaboration.
