Controls Engineer

Indianapolis $100,000+ Permanent

Responsibilities


  • Maintain and troubleshoot automation systems to ensure optimal performance of PLCs, HMIs, and related control infrastructure.
  • Develop and implement robust control strategies, including hardware selection, sensor integration, safety systems, and intuitive HMI interfaces.
  • Support capital projects by contributing to the design and specification of control system architecture, instrumentation, and functional requirements.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives targeting increased system flexibility, uptime, and overall equipment efficiency.
  • Lead or assist in the integration of new equipment into existing automation frameworks, ensuring alignment with process requirements.
  • Collaborate with operations and maintenance teams to train personnel on system functionality, safety protocols, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Support maintenance teams in evaluating and improving repair strategies and component selections for optimal long-term equipment performance.
  • Generate and maintain documentation including schematics, functional specifications, I/O lists, and change logs.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams, vendors, and engineers to identify and fulfill automation requirements on both existing and new systems.
  • Conduct cost-benefit and feasibility analyses to support automation upgrades or expansions.
  • Inspect and validate automation systems to ensure compliance with applicable industry standards, codes, and safety guidelines.



Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical discipline.
  • 3+ years of engineering experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
  • Hands-on experience designing, programming, and troubleshooting industrial control systems.
  • Proficient in one or more PLC platforms (e.g., Siemens, Allen Bradley, Omron, Beckhoff, Mitsubishi) and HMI development tools.
  • Familiarity with controls integration, sensor technologies, and safety system design.
  • Strong project coordination and time management skills.
  • Experience in continuous improvement or lean manufacturing environments is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills; comfortable working across functions and with external vendors or integrators.
